When branding becomes coded behaviour

October 23, 2026

Branding is increasingly becoming coded behaviour, with identities adapting their content, mood, tone and visual expression to different situations, much like we do throughout our day, without losing sight of who we are.

Rather than designing every possible application, we can start defining the logic behind how a brand responds to its surroundings.

Imagine a digital billboard responding to a football victory nearby, changing its message, motion and visual energy. Or a food brand adapting its creative as a concert ends, adjusting its product focus and tone to the moment. Not simply swapping headlines, but adapting the design itself to make communication more timely, more personal and more purposeful.

Some of this is already happening.

Amazon's Responsive eCommerce Creative (REC) dynamically generates and optimises ads across different formats, including editorial-style layouts and interactive product questions.

But what happens when we take this beyond individual campaigns? Brand guidelines are starting to become executable guardrails, while brand libraries have the potential to evolve into systems that generate, adapt and test creative using real-time data.

Instead of producing endless variations, designers can work alongside engineers to define what changes, what triggers those changes and what stays consistent. AI is making this increasingly practical, removing some of the constraints that have traditionally limited creative experimentation.

Of course, more variations don't necessarily mean better communication, and not every creative decision should be automated.

But I believe in brands that respond to their surroundings and audiences while remaining recognisable. Not replacing the foundations of branding, but extending what we can do with them.
