Some brands seem determined to explain everything about themselves.
What they believe. What makes them different. What their logo represents. Even the meaning behind every creative decision.
There's nothing wrong with being clear. People should understand what they're buying, who they're dealing with and why it matters.
But do we really need to explain everything?
I like it when a brand gives me something to figure out for myself.
Think about a film trailer that gives away the entire plot. Or a restaurant that describes every detail of the experience before you've stepped inside. The information might be useful, but some of the pleasure of discovery disappears.
Brands can do something similar.
A slightly unusual name, an unexpected visual detail or a campaign that doesn't reveal everything at once can encourage people to look closer. The audience becomes part of the process, making connections rather than simply receiving explanations.
Look at how fashion brands build anticipation around collections, or how certain cultural institutions use restrained identities that leave their work to do the talking. These decisions aren't necessarily about exclusivity. They can create space for interpretation.
Of course, mystery isn't an excuse for confusing people. A financial service hiding its fees or a website making basic information difficult to find isn't creating intrigue. It's creating frustration.
Good brand positioning still needs a clear reason for people to choose you. And a distinctive brand identity should help people recognise you, even when every message isn't immediately explained.
There's a difference between making something difficult to understand and making it worth discovering.
Not every question needs an answer in the first five seconds.
Sometimes, leaving a little unsaid gives people a reason to stay curious.
