The way a business charges people can say more about its character than the words it chooses to describe itself.
A business can sound generous in its advertising and remarkably petty at checkout.
The language is warm. The photography is welcoming. Then a compulsory fee appears just before payment, and the personality changes rather quickly.
I tend to see pricing as part of how a brand expresses itself. What a business charges, what it includes and when it reveals the full cost communicate an attitude.
A high price can be understandable. The product may be better made or the service more demanding. People can decide whether it is worth paying when they know what they are getting.
What I find harder to justify is discovering an essential extra halfway through a booking. The amount might be small. The feeling of being misled can be harder to dismiss.
Discounts communicate too. If the same product is always on promotion, customers may learn that the regular price is for people who missed the schedule. If loyal customers have to threaten to leave to get the introductory rate, loyalty starts to look rather poorly advised.
These are commercial decisions with consequences for the expectations a brand creates. A business promising simplicity should make its pricing easy to follow. One built around care should examine whether its policies make customers feel looked after.
Businesses need margins. Costs rise. Additional work deserves an additional charge. None of that prevents a straightforward explanation.
When reviewing how a brand is experienced, I’d include the invoice, the renewal email and the cancellation terms. The business is speaking through them.
